Can Rory McIlroy Win The Open in Front of Home Crowd?

One of my favorite events of the season tees off in just a few hours as the world’s best golfers are in Northern Ireland for the Open Championship. Set that alarm for 2:30a! I had the privilege of working four Open Championships from 2008-11 (and 12 overall if you count the Senior and Women’s Opens). Just an awesome experience, where you come away with a better appreciation for golf.

Everyone, LIV included, is back together again for the final major of the season. After we saw golfers with multiple major wins take down the Masters (Rory’s 5th) and the PGA Championship (Scottie’s 3rd), J.J. Spaun stunned the world in winning the U.S. Open in June.

So who do we like heading into the final major?

Jon Rahm to win (+1200), top-10 finish (+115)

Of the top contenders, a lot of people are going to like McIlroy (+750) since it’s a home game and he’s coming of a runner up finish in Scotland or Scheffler (+450) because he is world No. 1 or maybe even Bryson (+2000) since he seemingly is involved in every major leaderboard. However, with Scottie and Bryson not having much past success at the Open and Rory’s price too low for me (I will play him in positions), my money is going to Rahm with the better 12-1 price.

Rahm was right there at the PGA Championship and very well may have won it if not for a rough back 9 combined with Scheffler going into Scheffler mode. He followed that with a T-7 last month at the U.S. Open and has been a majors machine, with 14 top 10s, including two wins, in his last 29 majors. He’s finished in the top 7 in three of the last four Opens and was T-11 here in 2019, even with a final round 75. We are going to play him top-10 finish as well, but hope he cashes us that 12-1 ticket.
