NBA On the Court
An almost full slate of NBA games to choose from tonight as we only have two nights left before the All-Star break. Let’s start with a great Western Conference matchup
Detroit Pistons (-1.5, 222.5) at Toronto Raptors
I'm not getting cute here.
The Pistons are on the short list of best teams in the East and, well, I don't think the Raptors are. Neither team played last night and both teams are approaching the All Star Break, so I don't think there are any moving pieces on that front.
Injuries? Not really.
Suspensions? Not yet clear for the Pistons and maybe that is why the line sits where it does right now, but considering we haven't yet heard on the status of Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart stemming from the brawl with Charlotte, might we just be looking at a post-ASB situation?
I'll jump on the road team now and ask questions later.
Even if the big men are absent for this game, the Raptors aren't a high volume or high success rate from inside of 10 feet, so I'm not sure my handicapping would change in a major way.
As for the game as it stands right now, we have Vegas labeling it as a coin toss and Canada's finest hasn't been good in those spots recently (1-4 ATS in their last five with a spread under three points in either direction). Detroit is the second best road team in the league this season (17-7) and a large part of that is the relentless aggression of Cade Cunningham (DET: fifth highest opponent foul rate).
The Raptors allow opponents to make over 60% of their shots inside of 10 feet and with a pair of specialists serving as hired guns on the perimeter (Duncan Robinson and now Kevin Huerter), this is a Pistons offense that figures to stretch the home team awfully thin.
Credit to Toronto for winning three of their last four, but aren't they kind of settling into who they are? Over their last six games, they are 3-3 with wins over Utah, Chicago, and Indiana. The losses have come to New York (by 27), Orlando (by 10), and Minnesota.
This might be one of those "bet whoever the favorite" teams for the "second half" of the season. They are in good position to be a playoff team, but the Raps profile as a team that is going to go to script more often than not in terms of outright wins/losses.
You'll get a chance to back the Dinosaurs coming out of the break if you're operating under that logic (Chicago and Milwaukee), but things get tough in a hurry as March nears.
I was on the Pistons -1.5 when this line opened last night and it hasn't budged. I'll obviously be less happy with my position if Duren/Stewart sit, but I still think Cunningham has success in this spot and that gives this team a good chance regardless of who is active (the athleticism of Ausar Thompson should prove huge against this attacking Raptors bunch).
Pistons -1.5
