NBA on the Court

San Antonio Spurs at Detroit Pistons (-1.5, 2232.5)

On a slow night in the Association, we get a great one in Detroit with a pair of teams on the rise, squaring off in what sportsbooks are labeling as essentially a coin flip game. And should I dare use the overused “A possible Finals preview” line? Naw.

These are two of the hottest teams in the league and picking a winner is difficult. If you forced me to do so, I'd take the points with the Spurs, understanding that these are two of the top-5 rebounding teams in the league, but the Pistons remain without Isaiah Stewart (suspension from fight before All-Star Break).

I may jump in on that market, but I've already grabbed Victor Wembanyama under 2.5 assists (+116 at FanDuel). The Frenchman has been doing it all in San Antonio's two games post All Star Break (45 points, 26 rebounds, 10 assists, and 9 blocks in 55 minutes), but the usage trends point in a very specific direction and I think they continue against the defense with the sixth lowest opponent assist-per-FGM rate.

They aren't running the offense through Wemby, they've made Wemby the offense with Stephon Castle and De'Aaron Fox handling essentially all of the creating. I think that's the right approach and given the success this team has had, why pivot?

The Pistons allow the fifth-fewest uncontested triple tries per game this season, so even if there are collapsing defensive principals on Wemby tonight, are we confident that his teammates step up in a major way from the perimeter?

One final thing to consider here is how leading scoring frontcourt players have fared against the Pistons recently:

- Kevin Durant: 19 shots, 3 assists
- Jaylen Brown: 28 shots, 2 assists
- Pascal Siakam: 12 shots, 2 assists
- Kawhi Leonard: 13 shots, 1 assist
- Kawhi Leonard: 26 shots, 2 assists

I picked the Spurs to win and that means I think Wemby is productive, but in this specific regard, I think he comes up short of the number and we are getting plus-money to go that direction.

Wembanyama u2.5 assists (+116)

Don’t go away! We have some more NBA plays, and some 2nd-half NHL futures to look at

More NBA on the Court

I’ve done many crazy things in this field, but writing the Kings-Grizzlies preview for PrizePicks is right up there with toughest things to come up with. Both teams stink, both teams are “tanking”, and both teams have multiple players out for foreseeable future. But we dug into that game, so we have picks on it.

Ty Jerome over 25.5 Points+ Rebounds + Assists

  • One of the players I dove into on PrizePicks, Jerome has only played 7 games this season (missed 46 games with calf injury), but he’s hit both his player prop and PRA prop in six of them.

  • Averaging 27.7 PRA over the 7 games, which includes a 28 points, 7 assists, 1 rebound game just 19 days ago vs. this same Kings team.

  • Now, about that Kings team… lost 16 straight… bottom of league in almost every category, including 3rd-most points allowed and 6-most assists allowed. They also allow the most points in the NBA in the paint.

  • On the Memphis side, the injury list is longer than the show drifts in my driveway. Morant, Edey, Caldwell-Pope, and many others out. Jerome’s usage is going up every game back and should continue.

Kings vs. Grizzlies (-4, 233.5)

  • Why not give a second play off this great game, right? Another thing that jumped out at me when I studied this game was just how awful these defenses are.

    • 22nd (Grizzlies) and 28th (Kings) in points allowed

    • 19th (Grizzlies) and 29th (Kings) in defensive rating.

    • And the numbers are worse in February (rating 20th and 30th; 28th and 30th in PPG allowed)

  • They played 19 days ago. Score? 129-125 (254!)

  • Memphis is one of the faster paced teams in the league, 10th at 101.62. Seven of their last nine games have gone over the total.

  • Let’s not minimize the fact that neither team wants to actually win here. That means no defense.

NHL on the Ice

It’s been some time since we’ve seen NHL games, but the Olympics are over and the players are coming home from Italy. I took a look at some futures coming out of the break and you won’t be stunned where I went with what I think is good value.

Florida Panthers to Make Postseason (+250 at DraftKings)

  • Sure, I am usually making Stanley Cup bets on the Panthers, and I still have the preseason one, but the two-time defending champs need to make the postseason first.

  • It was a struggle in the first half due to too many injuries to count, but despite all that, they are only 8 points out of a playoff spot.

  • Matthew Tkachuk is back and healthy as we saw in the Olympics and they couldn’t have played any worse heading into the break, losing five of six.

  • A long break is exactly what they needed. I have faith the coach and team are ready for the final 25 games of the season. And they’ve been here before. Two of the three straight years they advanced to the Cup finals were sweats to even get in.

  • Getting +250 on a team that’s been there before.

Recapping the Weekend

How Did We Do?

For the third straight weekend, we had a good golf week, cashing a bunch of props. And we tweeted out a fun, 10th-hole strategy on Saturday that was profitable.

Here is a quick recap of how this newsletter did on the weekend (Friday’s newsletter).

NBA

  • Hit both props with Herro and Mitchell. A nice 2-0 prop night.

GOLF

College Hoops

  • Dipped our toe in and hit our lone play, UNC over Cuse.

BETR Plays

  • Went 0-3 in golf plays for our new partners at BETR (9-6 on the golf season).

  • Hit our NBA BETR play on Friday night, using both props from newsletter.

  • If not in the newsletter, make sure to catch them on Twitter/X

Betting Tip of the Week

Filter Through the Noise

Everyone has their system or their way of attacking the lines. I am more of an aggregator of information, meaning I gather all the info I can in order to make the best decision. With that comes a lot of noise to filter through, which is the first step in trying to decide what to use and what not to use.

There is no perfect science, but historical betting stats that go too far back (different coaches/players) or small sample sizes are usually just noise. Settle on relevant stats or trends that help you and trusted sources that make you smarter. That will help you in the long run.
