I can’t promise this game to be a work of art. In fact, I can almost promise that it won’t be, but this is the type of “spot” game that we run into on occasion in the NBA and I can’t resist.

The Jazz are wrapping up a six-game homestand to round out January and while the result haven’t been pretty since the upset win over Minnesota last Tuesday (0-4, allowing 132 points per game), they are still the less fatigued team that is accustomed to playing at altitude.

The Nets have been just as bad recently (1-12 in their past 13 including seven straight losses), so current form doesn’t exactly lean in either direction. That said, Brooklyn is on Game 4 of a five-game road trip and this is their third game in four nights (Phoenix on Tuesday and Denver last night).

The schedule gods alone are smiling on the home team for this one and that’s without noting the fact that this shallow Nets team has played full throttle for 48 minutes in each of their past two games.

Lauri Markkanen is getting the night off for the home team and that’s worth noting, but it’s not as if Utah is playing without their star for the first time (this will be his 14th DNP of the season) and we know that Keyonte George is capable of taking over (73 points across two games two weeks ago and 17 assists against five turnovers in his past three games).

Utah is the fresh and comfortable team that ranks second in pace this season. For better or worse, they want to maximize the possession count and that’s not a great spot for Brooklyn (29th in pace, bottom-7 in both transition offense and defense).

Two-thirds of Jazz wins have come at home this season and they are 15-11 ATS in front of their home fans (seventh best, 10-12 ATS on the road, 10th worst). In January, this team has wins over Cleveland and Minnesota, took Oklahoma City to overtime, and had a lead over San Antonio with nine minutes remaining.

Are they good? No. Can they be reasonably competitive and take advantage of a gift like this schedule wise?
